Switch off your lights for an hour  on  Saturday, 26th March, 8:30 pm.

What is Earth Hour?

It is a global sustainability movement with 50 million supporters across 35 countries and territories.  It started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia with around 2.2 million people and 2000 business firms who turned their lights off to take a stand against climate change.  In 2009, there were millions of people from more than 400 cities in 88 countries who participated in this event. In 2010, a total of 128 countries and territories supported Earth Hour.  They are the people who believe that the Earth’s natural environment has to be preserved. They are working together and united in switching off the lights for just an hour every year to save our planet for a more sustainable future.

UPDATE:   March 26, 2011

A total of 130 countries and thousands of cities participated in switching off the lights for 60 minutes to save the planet.

According to Mr Andy Ridley, joining founder and executive director of Earth Hour,  the message of this activity is “for people and communities across the globe to join together with the common purpose of a sustainable future for our planet.”
