Facebook Stories unveiled its 25 Most-checked in Places around the world as part of its year-end review.

Travel still ranks as the second hottest topic in the social media next to relationship updates. It includes some of the places most people are already familiar with such as Disneyland, Gorky Park, and Marina Bay Sands – predominantly theme parks and city squares. Places for recreation and relaxation such as stadiums and spas are also in the list.

Most check-ins in 2013

Facebook researched top 25 Facebook-using countries with active users all over the world and found out which places are usually checked-in during holidays and vacation trips. It also looked at some of the most frequented travel destinations in every country and came up with a country-level as well as global ranking of popular sites.

  • Theme parks

Disneyland has been around for over 50 years and still remains as one of the most visited holiday sites around the world. Among the most checked-in sites according to Facebook users are Disneyland Paris, Hong Kong Disneyland, Disneyland Tokyo, and Disneyland Anaheim, California.

Other known parks that are also very popular in Facebook check-ins include the Parque Ibirapuera in Brazil, Taksim Square in Istanbul, Victoria and Alfred Waterfront in South Africa, Piazza San Marco in Venice, Las Ramblas in Barcelona, and Gorky Park in Russia.

  • Spas and tourist spots

Places to relax and unwind such as spas and tourist attractions are also some of the favorite check-ins in 2013.  Among these are the Blue Lagoon in Reykjavik, Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt, and Harmandir Sahib in India.

  • Sports and recreation centers

Spectator sports and theater arts offer the most fun and thrilling ways to spend the holiday vacation. This is the reason why stadiums and other recreational centers are among the most visited sites as shown in Facebook’s 25 Most-checked in places. On the top of the

list are the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia, the O2 Arena in London, and Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City.

Places frequented by locals such as malls and street walks also received some popularity.  The Ikeja City Mall of Nigeria, Tianan Flower Night Market in Taiwan, and Myungdong Street in South Korea are excellent examples of these.
