Vietnam is one of the popular travel destinations in Asia.  The number of  tourists visiting the country have been increasing steadily and may exceed its target of 6.5 million international visitors  this year.

Known to be a country with numerous green rice fields, surrounded by mountains and fascinating coastlines, Vietnam is also the eighth most populated place in Asia with more than 86 million people. It is also interesting to know that there are about 16 million motor bikes in the country.

Tourists come to this place to be fascinated by its culture, food, cities, resorts, beaches and islands.

Best places to see

  • Mekong River – Considered to be the 7th longest river in Asia and 12th in the world, visitors can enjoy the cruises and the exciting views of the cities and temples along the river shores.
  • Cu Chi Channel – Located in the southern part of the country, the underground tunnels were used as hiding place not only during the French occupation in 1940 but also during the Vietnam War in 1960. The place used to be an underground refuge composed of 250 km of chambers and tunnels in the city of Ho Chi Minh.
  • Hoi An –  The city is an old town and a fishing village  located along the coast of South China Sea. It is also known as the Venice of Vietnam because of its narrow canals. The town has well-preserved landmarks, buildings and trading port used in the 15th to 19th centuries. It has been declared as World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999.
  • Nha Trang – The most famous sea side resort town located in the city of Hanoi. This place is known to be a favourite leisure spot because of scenic views, beaches and clear ocean water. Some of the things that you can do are cruising, sailing, surfing, biking and rafting tour.
  • Ha Long Bay –   Designated as the ‘Renowned National Landscape’ in 1962, this Bay is also listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its aesthetic and geological value.  There are around 2,000 small islands made of limestone. This year, Ha Long Bay has been named as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

The best time to visit Vietnam is during the cold months of December to February.

Vietnamese  Food

The basic ingredients in most of the Vietnamese cuisine are rice, fish sauce and soy sauce.

  • Pho –  noodles served with beef or chicken in hot and spicy soup
  • Gio Lua –  lean pork pie wrapped in banana leaves
  • Cha Ca – grilled mince fish that has been marinated in salt
  • Nom –  salad served with fresh vegetables like cabbage, papaya, cucumber and mixed with vinegar in choices of sweet, sour or spicy
  • Nem Ran or Cha Gio –  fried spring roll consisting of unshelled shrimps, sea crabs, minced pork, mushrooms and seasonings
  • Banh Chung –   sticky rice cake wrapped in bamboo leaves and is made of green beans paste, pork and rice

Vietnam’s culture started  4,000 years ago. Due to the various influences from the Chinese, Polynesian and Western countries, it has transformed to become a combination of traditional and innovative culture.

From 2012-2015, the country will be using “Vietnam – Timeless Charm” as its slogan and the five petal lotus as its symbol.
