Bermuda Triangle

The world is still abuzz on the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 and as of this posting, there’s still no news as to the mysterious flight’s whereabouts.

It may well become one of history’s most prominent unsolved mysteries, but there have been quite a few ones who preceded it.

Yes, history has been full of unexplained stuff, from people disappearing, mysterious deaths, controversial sightings, to out-of-this-world creatures.

We’ve always been fascinated with mysteries and strange happenings and one good reason why they remain in our thoughts is because they haven’t been solved, at least there’s no still no definite or unanimous explanation.

So here are five of the history’s biggest mysteries:

Shroud of Turin

While the Shroud of Turin is regarded as the most famous religious relic, there is still a lot of debate surrounding it. Is it really the burial cloth of Jesus? The answer to this question is historically significant considering that more than half of the world believe in Jesus as the saviour.

Most Christians believe that the shroud appears to manifest the imprint of a man’s body. The body appears to have wounds that are eerily similar to those wounds of Jesus as he died in the cross, according to the Bible. But similar to other mysteries, there are many scholars who dispute the shroud’s authenticity. Up until now, its origin remains a mystery.

Marilyn Monroe

Actually, the mystery here is not about Marilyn Monroe herself but that of her death. The famous actress died in August of 1962 due to an “apparent or probable suicide.” The Los Angeles County coroner declared she overdosed herself with barbiturates.

Since she died at a very young age of 36 and with lots of fame on her name, people began to speculate. Conspiracy theories soon appeared one after the other including the discrepancies of the time her body was found, her links to President Kennedy and his brother, Robert, and organized crime bosses. The disappearance of her internal organs didn’t help the confusion.

Amelia Earhart

There’s no other aviator in history more famous than Amelia Earhart. However, her name lingers in history not because of her remarkable achievements in flight but the fact that she was never found after an attempt to fly around the world in 1937.

Amelia, together with navigator Fred Noonan disappeared and never again to be seen or rescued after the ill-fated attempt. And because there were no bodies recovered or wreckage discovered, there have been so many theories trying to explain what really happened.

For instance, one theory said that the plane may have been gunned down by the Japanese near the Marshall Islands and another one says that Earhart actually succeeded and returned to the U.S. with a new identity courtesy of the government. Now even with all the sophisticated technology in navigation and search today, there is still no evidence or proof that Earhart’s plane did crash.

Bermuda Triangle

Of course, this list wouldn’t be complete without the legend of the Bermuda Triangle. The mystery surrounding the area that covers the coast of Florida, Puerto Rico, and Bermuda started in December of 1945 when a large group of military planes with 14 men on board went missing and has never been seen until now.

After that, there were more reported disappearances in the same area including two British South American Airways passenger planes, oil tanker, small passenger plane, and a yacht. There are several books telling the stories and attempting to provide explanations and theories about the Bermuda Triangle.

Loch Ness Monster

The mother of all creature/animal mysteries is the Loch Ness monster. It may well be one of the oldest, too. As a matter of fact, the earliest report of a sighting in the Loch Ness (Scotland) was in 1871.

Since then, there have been dozens of other similar sightings and the most recent and perhaps most convincing is that of George Edwards in November of 2011. Named by the U.S. research team as Nessie, nothing has been found out of the ordinary up until now.

If you Google the search term “world’s biggest mysteries,” you will be amazed at the number of different ones listed. This implies that the kind of world we live in is something full of unknown and undiscovered stuff, which by the way leaves us humans with the never ending fascination for the weird and unexplained.
