United Nations Plea to Save Afghanistan from Humanitarian Issue

Around 4.4 billion USD in aid was requested by several UN agencies for Afghanistan to avert humanitarian issues that could potentially lead to national distress, hunger, and death, as well as the mass exile of people from the country.

These agencies, such as the UNHCR and OCHA, as well as their non-governmental organization partners, have provided their Humanitarian Response Plans for 2022 in an attempt to provide relief for the nation of Afghanistan.

Martin Griffiths, who is the UN Undersecretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, spoke about their plans to launch relief support at a press conference held in Geneva. He states that this will be their largest-ever appeal for a single nation when it comes to humanitarian aid.

Furthermore, Griffiths also mentioned that the events in Afghanistan have unfolded drastically over the past years with profound consequences for its people. Truly, the whole world is overwhelmed trying to figure out the best way to prepare for the looming humanitarian catastrophes.

Several of these refugee and humanitarian response plans have goals that aim to offer vital humanitarian relief to about 23 million people in Afghanistan. These will also be given to around 5.7 million Afghans that are displaced in several local communities, spanning over 5 neighboring countries, such as Pakistan, Iran, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan.

Moreover, it is important to note that funding will be required from donors and the Afghanistan Humanitarian Response Plan has requested a total amount of 4.4 billion USD. If successfully funded, the amount will go to aid organizations so that they may speed up the output of health services, protection services, education, food and agriculture support, sanitation, clean water access, as well as delivery. Around 623 million USD is needed by the Afghanistan Situation Regional Refugee Response Plan alone to support 40 organizations.

Griffiths was also explaining how this humanitarian crisis is overwhelming Afghanistan. In 2021, the nation had to deal with an increase in disruptions to services resulting in the struggle to meet the needs of the population.

The economy of the nation has suffered drastically due to several reasons, such as the freezing of assets in the central bank reserves, the pause in international development assistance, the disruptions in markets, and more, upon which some of the basic social services rely. In addition, there were several climate-induced issues like the harsh winter season and one of the worst droughts in history experienced by the nation.

About 23 million people are now at risk of acute hunger. Around 700,000 OCHA’s relief aid plan will account for displaced citizens. There is also an open dialogue between the Taliban and the international community about the need to provide immediate relief to Afghanistan.

Filippo Grandi, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, highlighted that there is a need for the international community to take the needed steps to further prevent the catastrophe that Afghanistan is experiencing. It is crucial that we do not forget that there is a regional dimension to this said crisis, as explained by Grandi. He further stated that this does not only apply to Afghan refugees but also to those that have been involved in hosting.

Grandi states that the key is to address the people who have been displaced as this will aid in stabilizing the situation inside Afghanistan. Another target goal highlighted at the press conference was to support efforts that are trying to rebuild the social and economic structures of the nation. It is also crucial that we invest in services that will help secure the possibility of those displaced returning to their homes. The UN leaders have expressed their hope that these funded relief plans would accomplish their goals.
