Health Benefits of Positive Thinking

January 23, 2012 | Life & Leisure

The first reaction that most people have about being positive is that of skepticism. For them, a positive attitude doesn’t make any difference. What will happen is bound to happen no matter what, almost a fatalistic attitude. They believe that fate is beyond their will. If something bad is going to happen, no amount of positive thinking can ever redeem the situation. But is this really true? Are we powerless against the so-called fate?

In simple terms, positive thinking is a mental attitude that seeks to find successful outcomes – a state of mind that has a great influence in making the right actions and the right decisions. Some people think of it as merely psychological with no significant effect to one’s mental and physical performance. But science proves otherwise.

Studies have shown that our subconscious mind can greatly affect every bit of our actions and thoughts. Positive thinking is not a conscious habit as others thought, although it can be acquired with conscious effort. A person may think he is thinking positively but subconsciously he is expecting for the worst. Being positive is accepting the fact that we are all capable for success and that we are the masters of our own destiny.

Positive thinking not only helps in getting the job done or having your own car and dream house. It also improves our quality of life and helps achieve total well-being.  Positive attitude can be acquired through constant and persistent practice.

What are the health benefits of positive thinking?

  • Longer life span
  • Boosts our immune response
  • Reduces risks of cardiovascular diseases
  • Enhances brain activity
  • Lower stress levels

What are the simple rules of positive thinking?

  • Change the way you think about yourself. We are all created as unique individuals endowed with gifts and capabilities different from others. You are unique and therefore special.
  • Find what you’re very good at and capitalize on it. Don’t try to outdo others or to make yourself a copy of them. Remember, you are unique.
  • Visualize yourself the way you want to be. Most people have underestimated the power of mental suggestions and visualizations. The law of attraction states that you attract into your life whatever you think about. This has been proven a number of times.
  • Be persistent and concentrate in achieving your goal. You must have the strong will and determination to change the way you think. Let it sink into your subconscious until it becomes a part of your system.

Above all, maintain a healthy and cheerful disposition in life. Remember the words of the wise king about positive thinking, “A cheerful heart is a good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones” and again “A man reaps what he sows.”

When a positive thinker is faced with a stressful situation they handle it better. When you worry less, you stress less. A great reason to start thinking more positively.
